A Family Of His Own

I just finished A Family Of His Own, the fourteenth (and final) book in Stephanie Laurens’ Cynsters Next Generation series. This was definitely my favorite book of the series: an exciting chase through Europe (with 3 children, their nanny and a dog) and not as much waffling wordiness as the other books. There were 24 grimaces and 13 huffs.

The book takes place in August, 1863 and is Toby and Diana’s story. Not to mention Roland, Bryce, Evelyn, Helga (the nanny), Bruno (the dog) and the hero, Rupert the Bear. It was very devious (and clever) of Adrian Fellows to send them all to his great-aunt at Fellows Hall in England, knowing full well that the great-aunt had passed away a couple years ago.

Highlights:

  • They take the train from Udine. Joe and I took the train from Udine in 2006!
  • Diana to Evelyn: The boys are going with Papa to see the smelly, smoky, dirty engine. Do you want to go, too?
  • Evelyn to Drake, making him blink: Rupert also helped stop the bad man with the gun in the alley, the one who was going to shoot our friend Eva. But Rupert flew at the man’s face, and then Eva shot the man dead.
  • Delayed honeymoon (11 months after the wedding in October 1863) to Lake Orta with the entire family, including infant son Thaddeus Adrian Cynster
  • Isola San Giulio is a real place in Lake Orta!
