I enjoyed The Dreadful Duke, the first book in Grace Burrowes’ new series, The Bad Heir Day Tales. The new series seems to be more straight up romance and less mystery than her Lord Julian books.
There were references to a previous adventure of one of the characters, Westhaven, which turned out to be covered in The Heir, the first book in an earlier series. So I read The Heir next, and will write about that when I finish the Windham series.
This book is about Finlay (Finn) and Wilhelmina (Willy).
Finn imagines Westhaven’s agenda: Confirm garden commissions. Flirt with countess. Lecture Huntleigh. Demolish plate of biscuits. Dispatch Huntleigh to the tailor’s. Sneak up to the nursery, there to adore offspring and resume flirtations.
Both Finn and Pritchard like Mozart operas:
- Mozart’s Don Giovanni is one of Pritchard’s favorites. Pritchard to Finn: One might better ask, Your Grace, what had you whistling the Catalogue Aria when you came in from tea with Lady Helmsby?
- Pritchard retreated down the steps to the lower reaches, humming the tune to Mozart’s lovely aria ‘Voi Che Sapete.’ Tell me what love is, what can it be What is this yearning burning me? Can I survive it, will I endure? This is my sickness, is there a cure?
I am looking forward to the next book, which will be The Mysterious Marquess (about Lucien Pritchard).
