Boston Pops rehearsal — Ray Chen: Epic Music from Anime, Film, and Games

Yesterday morning, Joe and I attended this year’s Boston Pops Working Rehearsal. We stayed through the entire rehearsal, and headed over to Symphony Sushi for lunch at 1:15pm. The program was wonderful: Ray Chen: Epic Music from Anime, Film, and Games.

It was nice to see that even the Boston Pops had to stop several times during their first read-through of Copland’s El Salón México. Keith Lockhart: This is not the kind of piece normally done with one rehearsal!

The Arcane Suite was having its world premiere last night. The arranger, Davies, was there and occasionally consulted. He explained tremulo (shimmer).

Joe and I had watched the first season of Arcane, but not the second. We may rewatch the first season (it was complicated, and a while ago) and then the second season.

Here’s the program. We heard all the pieces, though not in this order:

There were large screens on both sides of the stage, giving the audience a view of Keith Lockhart. That was new.
