One of this month’s free Kindle first reads was The Spider Silk Scarf: A Short Story, by Ana Reyes. I selected it because the description sounded like it was about two separate stories: From the New York Times bestselling author of The House in the Pines comes a haunting short story about grief, growth, and regret that asks the question, “What do you get when you steal from a witch?”
It took less than a half-hour to read and wasn’t at all clear if it was going to have a happy ending. But it did.
Highlight that sounded like a TARDIS: Clenching her jaw, she continued slowly along, then faster, as, like the coal chute, the hall began to feel like it was going on for too long, without any doors on either side, and she had the dizzying sense that the house was somehow bigger on the inside than it appeared from without.
