The Case of the Deadly Dog Show

The Case of the Deadly Dog Show was a free introductory novella to the new Lady Matilda series by Catherine Coles. It takes place in April, 1924 in Little Biddington, Devon, and is about Lady Matilda and her companion Hetty. I’m not sure I’ll read further books in the series, but you never know.

Possibly future books will feature the new Lord Dartcombe: a man named Matthew Harding, who apparently was a distant cousin. At the moment, all that was known about the new Lord Dartcombe was that he had served valiantly in the war and had thereafter gone to Africa. No one even seemed to know which country he had gone to, which was jolly important when one was trying to track down a person. Africa was a rather big place, after all.

There are cameo appearances by Tommy and Evelyn Christie, Lord and Lady Northmoor (I have the first three books in their series but haven’t yet read them): some of the more entertaining guests she had met at the wedding in Ireland—and Tommy’s Aunt Em was an absolute card.

Some of Hetty’s twisted sayings:

  • One can’t judge a pie by its crust.
  • Well, that’s certainly put the cat amongst the cuckoos.
  • This is all a fine kettle of kippers
  • It’s always darkest before the storm.
  • That’s a turnip for the books.
  • I, on the other hand, have been frightened quite out of my bits.
  • I’m glad that everything is wine and candy now.
