This year’s Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert (Great Performances season 53, episode 16) was a good thing to watch when I didn’t know how much time I’d have, and might have to stop at any point.
The Vienna Philharmonic performed an open-air concert from the gardens of Austria’s Schönbrunn Palace; bass-baritone Bryn Terfel performed opera arias and ‘If I were a rich man’ from Fiddler on the Roof. The concert took place on June 19 and was aired by Great Performances on August 28. It was conducted by Lorenzo Viotti.
Bryn Terfel was impressive, acting out all the songs. Other highlights:

- Korngold Straussiana
- Ravel Daphnis et Chloé with dancers’ shadows projected onto the palace walls–and flute, piccolo and alto flute solos
